This is an old favorite photo and quote. It turns out, Beaumont Newhall was born and raised in Lynn, MA like me. He wrote the first History of Photography book in 1937. He was the first Curator of Department of Photography at the MoMA The Museum of Modern Art in NYC and then became Curator of the George Eastman Museum (House) in Rochester, NY.
